In 1748 a group of slaves organized a mutiny against their masters on a ship sailing to the new world, they threw their masters overboard and ended up sinking the ship, they swam an estimated 3 miles before discovering this island, the 142 of them that survived took the island, and started lives there. They named their new home after the slave "guide" that planned the mutiny.
